چکیده

Since Bleam's (2000) initial claim that capturing clitic climbing patterns in Romance requires the descriptive power of set-local MCTAG (Weir, 1988), alternative approaches to relaxing tree-locality restrictions have been developed, including delayed tree-local MCTAG (Chiang and Scheffler, 2008), which, unlike set-local MCTAG, is weakly equivalent to standard TAG. This paper compares 2-delayed treelocal MCTAG with set-local MCTAG in terms of how well the two formalisms can account for the clitic climbing data. We confirm that 2-delay tree-local MCTAG has the formal expressivity to cover the data by proposing an explicit grammar to do so. However, we also find that the constraint on set locality is particularly well-suited for capturing these clitic climbing patterns. I.e., though globally less restrictive, set-local MCTAG appears to be restrictive in just the right way in this specific case.

Clitic climbing in Romance: "Restructuring", causatives, and object-control verbs

"Restructuring" in Romance refers to constructions which appear to violate Standard locality constraints, thereby presenting a challenge for syntactic theory. One of the most well-studied cases of restructuring is that of clitic climbing. This is illustrated in the Italian example (la), in which the clitic lo, the apparent object of leggere, appears on the higher verb vuole. As shown in (lb), i...

A Unified Account of Locality Constraints for Clitic Climbing and Long Scrambling

Clitic climbing (CC) in Spanish and Long Distance Scrambling (LDS) in German have certain similarities, leading to analyses (e.g., Sabel 1995, Wurmbrand 1998) that treat them in a similar way. However, they differ in restrictions placed on the movement of the clitics or scrambled NPs in cases of multiple clitics or NPs in one sentence, appearing to follow different constraints on inter-clausal ...

Defective Complements in Tree Adjoining Grammar

Syntactic theory has long made use of the idea that verbs can take complements of different sizes, such as as subject-raising or ECM verbs taking IP complements instead of full CP complements. By increasing options for the size of the complement, this approach has been used for “reduced constructions” in Romance or German, in which, e.g., a clitic can sometimes appear in a higher clause than th...

Binding Variables in English: An Analysis Using Delayed Tree Locality

This paper presents an analysis of bound variable pronouns in English using Synchronous Tree Adjoining Grammar. Bound variables are represented as multi-component sets, composing in delayed tree-local derivations. We propose that the observed anti-locality restriction on English bound variables can be for-malised in terms of a constraint on the delay in the composition of the bound variable mul...

Efficiently Parsable Extensions to Tree-Local Multicomponent TAG

Recent applications of Tree-Adjoining Grammar (TAG) to the domain of semantics as well as new attention to syntactic phenomena have given rise to increased interested in more expressive and complex multicomponent TAG formalisms (MCTAG). Although many constructions can be modeled using tree-local MCTAG (TL-MCTAG), certain applications require even more flexibility. In this paper we suggest a shi...
